In one sense, this topic is a timeless one, because the Restoration[1. Restoration of the Gospel] and the Constitution[2. The Constitution of the United States of America *7] trace their beginnings almost to the same point in time, and over the intervening two centuries have grown and flourished side by side.
And yet, in another sense, the subject is not only timely, but also time-driven...

The Divinely Inspired Constitution » [Dallin H. Earlier in his career he had taught at the University of Utah College of Law. There he met many Latter-day Saint law students. "They all seemed to believe that the Constitution was divinely inspired," he said, "but none of them could ever tell me what this meant or how it affected their interpretation of the Constitution." I took that challenge personally, and I have pondered it for many years.[1. You have been in school here long enough to have a sense of the heavy burden your class schedule really is, and yet you still have enough time to keep up and be fully prepared for your first set of examinations and papers for the semester. To all of you we both say, "Welcome!"

The list is endless. All too often, answers to these questions seem to
be based, not upon any solid principle, but upon the popularity of the

Counselor in the First Presidency
Once again, my brothers and sisters, we are feeling the surge and influence of this great conference of the Church. I am grateful with you that President McKay is listening and watching this broadcast.
The precepts of men
The prophet Nephi once spoke of the woeful condition of mankind when deceived by the precepts of men. Said he:
"... wo be unto him that hearkeneth unto the precepts of men, and denieth the power of God, and the gift of the Holy Ghost!" (

Conference Report April 1969 » [Ezra Taft Benson » April 1969]

Elder Ezra Taft Benson
Of the Council of the Twelve
Thank God for that timely and inspiring message from our beloved leader, President David O. McKay.
My remarks today are directed to the humble followers of Christ. I pray that what I have to say will be of help to them.
One of the grand promises which the Lord made when he restored his Church in these latter days was that the Church should never again be taken from the earth nor given to another people. This is reassuring, for no matter how much individual apostasy we may see occur among Church members, the Church itself shall endure and remain intact...

The Constitution » [J. I intend to read what. 1 have to say today. I assure you I have tried to prepare it under the influence of our Heavenly Father, and I humbly pray that it will carry the message which I had hoped for.
I plan to say something today about the Constitution[1. The Constitution of the Unite States *7] of the United States of America - its Framers and some of its essential principles - America, the land choice above all other lands - for our great and priceless liberties. including the security of our homes and property, our freedom of speech and of the press, freedom of religion and the free exercise thereof, indeed freedom itself and its liberties, as our fathers knew and enjoyed, as also ourselves, depend upon its preservation...

Jesus' Prayer For Unity » [David O. JESUS' PRAYER FOR UNITY
Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me that they may be one as we are.
Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
That they all may be one: as thou, Father, art in me and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe in us. (John 17:11-21.) As nearly all of you readily recognize, I have quoted from one of the most sublime prayers ever offered among men...

Warning on Communism » [Heber J. This "Warning to Church Members" on the dangers of Communism is one of a series issued over the years but is one of the most succinct. It warns that at least Communist sympathizers were found in the ranks of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
According to the Columbia Encyclopedia. 1950: "In 1935, following the new line laid down at the Seventh World Congress of the Comintern of that year, the U...

Socialism & The United Order » [Marion G. This is the first time I have ever attempted to give a talk a second time. My excuse is that the Brethren have asked me to give this talk here tonight.
I suppose the best way to start a comparison of socialism and the United Order is with a definition of the terms. Webster defines socialism as:
Socialism defined
"A political and economic theory of social organization based on collective or governmental ownership and democratic management of the essential means for the production and distribution of goods; also, a policy or practice based on this theory...

I Testify » [Ezra Taft Benson » November 1988]

My beloved brethren and sisters, my heart is full and my feelings tender as we conclude this great general conference of the Church.
We have been richly blessed as we have listened to the counsel and testimonies of those who have spoken to us.
As a special witness of Jesus Christ, and as His humble servant, it is now my obligation and privilege, as the Spirit dictates, to bear pure testimony and witness to that which I know to be true. (See Alma 4:19.) This I will do.
I testify that we are the spirit offspring of a loving God, our Heavenly Father (see

The Constitution--A Heavenly Banner » [Ezra Taft Benson » September 1986]

On the seventeenth day of September 1987, we commemorate the
two-hundredth birthday of the Constitutional Convention, which gave
birth to the document that Gladstone said is "the most wonderful work
ever struck off at a given time by the brain and purpose of man"[1. William
Ewart Gladstone: Life and Public Services, ed. Thomas W. Handford

I heartily endorse this assessment, and today I would like to pay
honor--honor to the document itself, honor to the men who framed it,
and honor to the God who inspired it and made possible its coming
